RTE is the operator of the French electricity transmission system.
A public service company, it operates, maintains and develops the French high and very high voltage network. Electricity cannot be stored on an industrial scale: it must be available at all times, whatever fluctuations there may be in consumption and production. This balance is primarily assured by the high and very high voltage electricity transmission system, which provides the link between the production sources and areas of consumption.
RTE guarantees the correct functioning and reliability of the French electricity system, which result in the continuity and quality of the electricity supply to all consumers. It runs the largest network in Europe, with 100,000 km of lines ranging from 63,000 to 400,000 volts and 45 cross-border connections.
RTE employs more than 8,600 people. Its turnover in 2009 totalled €4.13 billion.
RTE is committed into a transparent approach to electric and magnetic fields.
RTE endeavours to take full responsibility for electric and magnetic fields within its sphere of activity and supports research into the possible effects of very low-frequency Electric and magnetic fields. This is reflected in :
• compliance with the recommendations of French and international health authorities, particularly the European Commission recommendation;
• initiatives to finance research in conjunction with international organizations, guaranteeing the independence of the researchers and making sure the results are published;
• ongoing efforts to provide employees, the public, health professionals and the media with transparent information about research progress;
• consultation of the partners, i.e. the authorities, elected officials, associations and local inhabitants.

Elia is the Belgian transmission system operator, transmitting electricity efficiently, reliably and securely from producers to distribution system operators and major industrial users.
Elia is responsible for importing and exporting electricity from and to neighbouring countries. Elia owns the entire Belgian very high voltage grid (150 to 380 kV) and some 94% (ownership and user rights) of the Belgian high-voltage grid (30 to 70 kV). The Elia grid comprises 5,614 km of overhead lines and 2,765 km of underground connections and is a key link between electricity markets in northern and southern Europe. It also links Belgian producers and consumers. Belgium's recent investment in interconnection capacity with its neighbours makes it one of the most open and interconnected grids in Europe. Elia has recently expanded its activities on a broader European level and, following its acquisition of German TSO 50Hertz and in cooperation with Industry Funds Management (IFM), is now one of the top five transmission system operators in Europe.
